Gear Bag

Gear is one of the best and worst parts of photography. It can either enhance the creative process or distract from it, and we photographers often vacillate between the two. I like to strike a balance between not having a bunch of gear and having just enough gear to make my life easier and to be able to create what I want to create. I would say I am more on the minimal side compared to some of my photography friends, but not ultra minimalist.

Here is a list of what I use on a regular basis, and any thoughts that might help you decide if you’re thinking about buying it. Some of the links may be affiliate links, but it’s all my honest thoughts.

CameraS

I’m somewhat camera-brand agnostic; I feel like cameras are tools for creation, and I like to have different tools depending on the job or my creative mood. Here are the cameras. I own and why I like them and what I recommend them for:

  • Fuji X-Pro2: This camera is listed first because it’s one of my favorites, maybe my favorite camera. It’s the camera that always begs to be picked up. At this point, it’s been all over the work and has the knocks to prove it. It’s a fun camera, it’s disarming when I want to take photos of people, it looks old, so people like to comment on it, and it’s light and inconspicuous if I need to be discreet or keep it in a pocket or bag.

  • Sony A7iv: This camera is a workhorse and pretty close to perfect for what I do. It’s not very sexy, and it usually doesn’t get picked up outside of work, but the autofocus and hybrid video are incredible. My only complaint is that the electronic shutter has crazy banding, and the mechanical shutter is really loud. I used to really dislike Sony for some reason, but I’ve grown to really like the brand, and of course, now, I own a bunch of them.

  • Sony FX6: This camera is amazing. I don’t like to shoot video with anything else anymore. It’s a special camera, and it’s inspiring to use and really cool when it’s all built out.

  • Fuji GFX 50s: It’s another special camera that is incredible to use.

Lighting:

  • Nanlite 120c Panels: I love these lights. They’re light, well-built, easy to use, and set up. I like them because they work in a small space like a corporate office or hotel room and they look professional.

  • Nanlite FC -500B

  • Godox AD400 Pro

  • Ulanzi 20w Inflatable
